Hils Learning - Happiness Is Learning Success

Working with Numbers

Uncategorized No Comments

Children who have great difficulty with numbers and number concepts are said to have Dyscalculia or the Math version of Dyslexia. For these children to gain access to the mysteries of Math, one of the most successful approaches is multisensory.

We’ve always known that learning by doing is the best way to promote understanding and very often, foster interest! By creatively manipulating everyday objects, children are able to better understand Math and its concepts. Abstract numbers become more apparent. Activities like measuring objects in the classroom, cutting cookies into halves and quarters, classifying groceries in the supermarket trolley; all bring Math to life!

We promote hands-on Math lessons at Hils because it works AND it’s fun. It puts true understanding and meaning to Math, that simple pushing numbers does not.

Food Intolerances

Uncategorized No Comments

We’ve always known that a child’s diet and nutrition can have a considerable impact on their overall behaviour and learning abilities. While there’s no ‘one-diet-fits-all’, some parents have tried reducing the amount of gluten from their child’s diet, to check for gluten-intolerances. An interesting article in The Star newspaper last week also talked about this:  http://parenthots.com/features/Families-going-gluten-free.aspx

It’s great that more people in the region are becoming more and more aware about possible food allergies and intolerances, especially in children, and are taking the right steps to address this.

Parent Support Group Night

Uncategorized No Comments

We had our Parent Support Group night last Thursday, and this was a big success. The session, chaired by Esther, looked into the practical aplications of Social Thinking concepts.

It was a great night of sharing and learning, as we looked into common, everyday situations and explored practical solutions through open discussions and sharing of experiences.

We  hope everyone was able to gain something useful out of the night, just as we have!
